What is Olympic Weightlifting?

Weightlifting, or Olympic Weightlifting is a sport of lifting a barbell loaded with weight overhead. The two main events in weightlifting are (1) snatch and (2) clean and jerk. These are explosive movements that require not only strength but also power, agility, balance, coordination and mobility.

I'm a beginner - can I do Olympic Weightlifting with Jim?

Yes! Jim will walk you through basic movements when you start your first month and adjust program to meet your level.

​I'm an experienced lifter - can I train with Jim?

Yes! Jim welcomes lifters of all level to train with him.

I've got an existing injury. Can I still train with Jim?

If you have an existing injury, please let Jim know. Jim will make accommodations as necessary but we highly recommend working with your doctor to address any current issues.

I'm interested in cross-training for my main sport. Can I train with Jim?

Weightlifting can help athletes develop strengths and explosiveness and enhance coordination and sports performance. Weightlifting is a great cross training sports for many athletes and Jim can help you reach your goals.

What should I expect on my first day?

On your first day, expect to meet Jim, check out the Sports Palace and get a good workout in. Bring water, wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes you can lift in.

Where is Jim Schmitz located? I thought he was on Valencia Street!

The Sports Palace is located in the basement of Physique Magnifique on 387 Grand Street. 

Jim has been teaching Olympic Lifting since 1968, when he got in the gym business with Alex's Sports Palace at 24th and Mission Streets in San Francisco, California. In 1972 he bought out his partners, moved the gym to 828 Valencia St, and renamed it to "The Sports Palace", where it was located until August of 1998. From 1998 until 2003, The Sports Palace was part of Valencia Street Muscle & Fitness at 333 Valencia Street. Since January of 2003 The Sports Palace has been located in the basement (dungeon) of the gym, Physique Magnifique at 387 Grand Ave. South San Francisco, CA., 94080.

Isn't this the Sports Palace? Why is it called 'Jim Schmitz - Olympic Weightlifting'?

Jim's weightlifting gym is called the Sports Palace. It is used synonymously with Jim Schmitz Olympic Weightlifting to represent his facility.

How do I sign up?

What do I need to bring on my first day?

On your first day, be prepared to get a workout in with Jim. Wear comfortable clothes and flat shoes you can lift in and bring water. A session with Jim typically lasts about 1 - 1.5hr depending on fitness level.

Am I too old/young to do Olympic Weightlifting?

Weightlifting is a great exercise for people of all ages and anyone can gain the benefits of weightliftng.

Do you coach powerlifting?

No. Jim focuses on weightlifting only.

Do we have beginner’s classes?

The first month beginner's program at the Sports Palace is catered towards beginners and provide instructions on how to lift and cover basic techniques. After the first month, Jim will keep providing you with a program that modified based on your level and needs.

Do we have team lifting hours?

For team lifting, you can come in any time during our open hours found here.

How many times a week can I train with Jim?

Most lifters train 3-5x a week depending on their fitness level and goals.

Do I need weightlifting shoes?

No, you don't need weightlifting shoes to start. If you have them already, that is great! Please bring them but it is not a requirement especially for beginners.

Do you offer free classes?

Unfortunately no, we do not offer free classes. But check out our pricing and offerings here to get more information.

Do you do personal training?

We only have team training available currently. Personal training is unavailable.
