What is Olympic Weightlifting?

Picture
Weightlifting is a technical, strength/power sport which requires excellent coordination, flexibility, balance, speed and of course strength.

Weightlifting, also called Olympic-style weightlifting or Olympic weightlifting, is the only barbell sport in the Olympic program. The two competition lifts are the snatch and the clean and jerk.

What You'll Learn Weightlifting with Jim Schmitz

The Snatch

A foundation of training in olympic weightlifting is the snatch. In a single motion - you'll learn to move a barbell from the ground over your head!

The first of the two lifts contested in weightlifting, the snatch is a technical lift that requires and builds various athletic qualities such as:

  • Speed
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Explosiveness

The Clean and Jerk

The second foundation of weightlifting training is the clean and jerk. In two separate motions, you'll learn to bring a barbell from the ground, to your chest and over your head!

The clean and jerk is a lift that requires and builds various athletic qualities such as:

  • Strength
  • Coordination
  • Explosiveness
  • Toughness

General Strength Training

In addition to training the classic lifts (Snatch & Clean and Jerk), you'll learn various strength movements including:
  • the back squat
  • the front squat
  • the deadlift
  • the overhead squat
  • the push press
  • the bench press
  • & much much more!

What People Are Saying

I've been training with Jim for a few months now and it has been a great experience so far. I usually feel a little intimidated when I walk into a new gym I've never been to especially if it is not a commercial gym but Jim and his lifters were very welcoming and Jim guided me on what to do and walked me through his program from day 1. It's a friendly community and you will get a good workout in and learn a lot. It is not an everyday opportunity to get coached by someone who coached team USA in the Olympics." - Soohee H

Jim Schmitz is one of the funnest coaches I have worked with. He is an amazing Olympic style weightlifting coach who tailors to your needs and lifting style whether you are a serious competitor or just looking to do weightlifting for fun. He takes the time everyday to work with everybody even on busy days.

He has a passion and knowledge of weightlifting and even coached 3 Team USA weightlifting teams at the Olympics. He will gladly tell you a story or 2 and teach you the history of weightlifting any day of the week.

He also has one of the most welcoming community of lifters who welcome you no matter what level you are (plus they are usually one of the largest and loudest group cheering you on at competitions).

If you have a passion for weightlifting or you are interested in learning the sport of weightlifting you should definitely hit Coach Jim up." - Jason B

I've trained with Jim since I was 8 or 9 years old.
He helped me get stronger in all of the sports I competed in throughout my childhood.

Later, I got recruited for the Menlo College weightlifting team and competed at the collegiate and national level.

I learned a lot about character, humor, and sarcasm. In addition, I learned firsthand the power of growing your mental and physical strength. Over the years, Jim has been nothing but supportive and humorous from my childhood to my collegiate weightlifting career. Thank you for everything." - Tatum D
